Beijing - What & Where to Eat :)

Hello Beijing!!! Hunt for local food is always one of the best part in a trip, so we are going to share about some good local food or snack that we tried throughout our trip in Beijing!

1. Qing Feng Steamed Stuffed Bun Shop (庆丰包子铺)
Once we touched down at Beijing Capital International Airport, our first meal was at the airport. Early in the morning, we looked for some light and healthy breakfast after a long night flight.

Steamed bun, red bean porridge, red date and marinated cloud ear fungus (black fungus). A healthy way to kick start our Beijing trip :)

2. KaoRouJi (烤肉季)
We were recommended by a local when we loitered around ShiChaHai (什刹海). This is a very famous and historical restaurant, for more details of the restaurant, can refer to HERE.

One of the signature dish there, Mongolian roasted rib (蒙古式烤羊排)! Strongly recommended! The rib was well-cooked, soft yet juicy, while the Mongolian style sauce gives a special taste for the rib, well combination!

Other dishes that we ordered that night, kailan with ginger, chicken mushroom soup and pan-fried dumpling.

3. Dawanju (大碗居)
There are few branches around BeiJing city and the one we visited was near to Temple of Heaven. Dishes here are good, not too oily and we enjoyed our lunch here trying out some local menu!

乾隆白菜 (Chinese cabbage with peanut sesame sauce),宫爆鸡丁 (chicken cube with some chili flake and onion),豆腐 (Tofu with mushroom). The tofu was the best we had in Beijing, other tofu that we tried was just...weird...LOL >.<

Address: 53 Dong'anmen St, DongDan, Dongcheng Qu, Beijing Shi, China, 100006.

4. Taste of DaDong(小大董)
A visit to Beijing would not complete if you never try on Peking roasted duck! After reading so many reviews and recommendations online, we decided to dine at Taste of DaDong(小大董)!

This award-winning restaurant served Peking roasted duck in small portion too (portion for one pax or etc.) instead of just serving one whole duck. One important thing is the roasted duck here was prepared in a healthier way where the duck was less oily compared to others.

We are in a group of 4, so we ordered 2 sets of Peking roasted duck. The sets are served with starter and duck soup! The soup was awesome!!! One small bowl was definitely not enough LOL.
Starter were some fried peanut, sweetened dried plum, braised pork, salted chicken wing and sliced vegetable in sesame sauce.

Here come our main course!!!!
Peking roasted duck!!!! Finger-licking good!!!

Served with crispy bun and thin dough, which is for you to wrap the roasted duck, together with some shredded vegetable and sauce. The roasted duck was so good that we felt like ordered again, too bad that our stomach was too full for that!

Tofu and vegetable soup, taste good too!!!

The sets included dessert! The dessert surprised us! It was too pretty to be eaten T.T  Cotton candy with a sugar-coated haw (冰糖胡芦) inside!

Total spending: CNY 292.
Address: LG 2-11, Parkview Green, 9 DongDaQiao Lu ChaoYang District.

5. 老北京炸酱面大王
We tried noodles with fermented bean paste as lunch at Summer Palace, which was not good -.- So we decided to try another one which is quite famous and gained a lot good review online.

There are many different choices of noodles here, and we go for the traditional noodles in fermented bean paste! Taste good! Served with few different kinds of shredded vegetables and beans. The fermented bean paste was served separately, so that you can adjust the taste by controlling amount of bean paste.

Top left: Soup noodles. Taste good too!!!
Top right: Asparagus with minced pork and ham. Like this so much, fresh and crispy!
Bottom left: Tofu in black sauce (taste weird by the way -.-).
Bottom right: Braised chicken feet (served chilled as a starter, preferred them to be served hot LOL).

Total spending: CNY100.
Address: 56 E Xinglong St, ChongWenMen, Dongcheng Qu, Beijing Shi, China.

6. Laoshi’s Dumpling(老石饺子)
This is a hidden small store in a hutong, near to Drum Tower (鼓楼). Main dish here is dumpling and we got to witness dumpling making process since the open kitchen is just next to our seat!

Ta-daa!!! From dough to a ready to steam or fry dumpling!

Top left: Fried long bean with dried chili and garlic! Strongly recommend this! So spicy yet so attracting! We cannot stop biting this although the spiciness numbed our tongue!

Top right: Corn soup, good for tongue recovery :P
Bottom left: Steamed dumpling, stuffed with vegetable and minced pork.
Bottom right: Fried dumpling, stuffed with mushroom and minced chicken.

10. 鲍师傅糕点 (雍和宫店)
After finish touring around YongHe Temple, we walked around the streets and noticed a crowd queuing outside a bakery. Out of curiosity, we followed the crowd and bought few types of hot-selling bakeries.

Walnut cookies and chicken floss bun. Both taste so good! No wonder locals queued for that! That's not wrong to follow locals :P

Total spending: CNY53.

11. Street food

Pancake is a common local snack that can be found easily along the street, especially when you are loitering around the Hutongs. Pancake that wrapped with some vegetables and even egg inside, chili powder and chili sauce were added upon request, turned into a favourite snack especially in the cold weather!

Total spending: CNY13.

The texture is like mo-chi, but is softer and coated with fine brown sugar. Not a bad idea to try on :P

Sugarcoated haw on a stick :)
